- When I'm on campus
As long as your computer has a network registration, you can map (or mount) shares by following these steps.
- In the Finder, hit command-K or navigate to Go > Connect to Server….
- Type in the address for your share. Here are some guidelines:
For a home share: cifs://ualbany;NetID@s05.cas.univ.albany.edu/NetID$
For a departmental share: cifs://ualbany;NetID@s05.cas.univ.albany.edu/DepartmentName
For a research share: cifs://ualbany;NetID@s06.cas.univ.albany.edu/ProfessorNamelab
NOTE: Replace the italics with the appropriate information.
- Click on the Connect button.
- A new icon should now appear on your desktop.
- When I'm off Campus
If you wish to access your shares from home or another location, you are required to use VPN software. VPN software causes your machine to work with the UAlbany network as if it were physically on campus. Once you are
logged into the VPN, you map shares as explained just above in the "When I'm on campus" section.
Step-by-step directions are available in PDF form on our Tutorials page.

How do I keep my computer secure?
- Turn your computer off. If a computer is not
on, it can not get infected or hacked. At minimum, turn it off every night.
- If you have Windows XP SP2, turn on the
firewall. To turn on the firewall, go
to the Start Menu, select Settings, select
Control Panel, select Security Center and
finally, select Windows Firewall. Make
sure it is turned on.
- If you are running Windows 2000 or XP, make
sure that you install critical patches.
If your computer is on the campus network, these patches are installed automatically,
all you have to do is reboot when prompted.
If you have a computer at home, you
can manually install the updates by clicking
on the Start Menu, select Control Panel and
then select Windows Update.
- Run Antivirus software. The University
has a site license for Symantec AntiVirus.
This license is available for faculty, staff
and students to use on campus and at home.
Antivirus software is installed when CAS Computing
sets up your computer. The virus definition
files are automatically updated over the network on campus.
To download antivirus software for your home
computer, go to http://www.albany.edu/its/download_antivirus_software.htm.
