Active directory accounts are needed to access the file and print shares on the CAS local area network. Active directory accounts are available
for faculty, staff and graduate students.
For information on getting a UAlbany
Active Directory account, click
here. UAlbany accounts give users
personal network storage space (the
N: drive). This drive is automatically
mapped when a user logs on to his or
her computer.
In addition to the N: drive,
the O: or departmental drive is mapped.
This is a shared resource for all members
of a specific department. Underneath
the O: drive, there are 4 folders. The
chair folder is accessible by the administrative
assistant and the chair. The office folder is accessible by all office staff
as designated by the department. The faculty folder which is accessible to faculty and staff only. Finally,
the common folder is accessible by all
members, including graduate students, of the department.
Faculty can also request to have research
shares created. Research shares are
usually named “facultymembernamelab”.
This enables faculty and graduate students
and other collaborators to easily share
and store files. Research shares are
mapped to the R drive. If you would
like to request a research share, email
cascomp@albany.edu
or call 442-2651. Please provide
a list of users that you would like
to have access to the share. In an effort to keep your share secure, please have a faculty or staff member make all requests for access to a share.
Faculty who teach in any of the
classrooms supported by CAS Computing (such as SS108, SS118) will also
have the classroom's drive (the
T: drive) mapped when logging in.
This enables faculty to copy files to
the classroom share in their office
and have them available when teaching
in the classroom.
Network shares can also be created
for other uses. In the past, CAS Computing
has created shares for faculty searches,
research collaboration between faculty
and many others. If you have a need,
feel free to contact us.
All network shares are backed up overnight, Monday
through Friday. If a file becomes corrupt
or is accidentally deleted, a request
can be made to restore the file from
tape by emailing cascomp@albany.edu.
Please provide the full path to the
file (the drive and folder(s) the file
was in) and the date that you want it
restored from. Restoring a file from
tape is not a trivial matter so please
use diligence when working with your
files. CAS Computing is happy to provide
this service when needed.
Access to network printers is also
provided through an active directory
account. Network printers are owned
by departments, research groups and
individual faculty members. If you have
any questions on the ability to print
to a network printer in your area or
need one configured, email cascomp@albany.edu.
