CAS Computing Services

Hardware support policy:

CAS Computing will fully support the following University owned hardware:

  • Intel Pentium III PCs and above
  • Apple G4s and above

Although there may be some usefulness for legacy machines, computer systems older than three years should be considered for replacement. Older systems are often more expensive in the long run than purchasing a new replacement machine. This is due to the cost of maintenance and the replacement of non-warranty parts.  CAS Computing will continue to support these systems on a best effort basis but will not upgrade operating systems.  Please refer to the CAS Computing Software Policy to determine if software installed on older systems will be supported.   Once a system is out of warranty, hardware problems will not be addressed by the PC Service Center.

University owned equipment used at home is supported provided the equipment is brought to campus for diagnosis and repair.  CAS Computing cannot support privately owned equipment whether used on campus or off.  Personally owned computers will not be added to the college’s domain.  Network shares can be mapped manually.  For instructions on how to map network shares, go to the CAS Computing FAQ page, http://cascomp.albany.edu/faq.htm

Maintaining individual or departmental servers outside of the college’s or university’s standard support structure is strongly discouraged.  The college runs servers that provide file sharing, print sharing and backup.  Faculty or staff who feel their needs can only be met by running their own server are encouraged to contact CAS Computing to develop a supportable solution.  Faculty and staff who insist on running their own servers do so in a self-supporting mode and are responsible for all operational and security aspects.  If a server is compromised or becomes insecure in any way, it is possible that it will be taken off of the network.  It is the user’s responsibility to return the server to a secure state.
