CAS Computing Services

Supported Software

CAS Computing provides full support for the following operating systems:

Windows 2000

Windows XP Pro

Apple OS X ver 10.2 and above

In this document, support means installing and making sure that the program runs.  CAS Computing will attempt to answer questions on how to use specific programs but we are not expert in the use of all of the applications that we support.

Windows 98 will be supported on a best effort basis but the operating system will not be reinstalled.  Microsoft is no longer supporting Windows 98.  CAS Computing encourages Windows 98 users to upgrade their systems as soon as possible.  CAS Computing does not support Windows ME or Windows XP Home Edition since these operating systems are not designed to run in a business environment.

The university holds software licenses for various operating systems and software packages.  These licenses are available for purchase through chargeback to departmental or research accounts.  For more information, please go to ITS’s software page at http://www.albany.edu/its/software/licenses.html.  CAS Computing will install, upgrade and support programs licensed by the University.  Specialized software is supported on a best effort basis.

Licensed software can be installed only on university-owned machines that are located on campus.  Some licenses are available for personally owned computers but it is the user’s responsibility to install and maintain the software.  Off-campus university-owned machines must be brought to campus for licensed software installation.

Software that is not licensed by the University will be re-installed after the repair or upgrade of a university-owned system only if the end user's license for the software is valid and current and the user has retained all installation materials and instructions.  This work will be performed on a best-effort basis; if installation fails it is the end user's responsibility to acquire support from the software vendor.  CAS Computing does not support or reinstall network connectivity software on off-campus university-owned machines.  The user is responsible for installation and support of ISP software for home use.

Software that is not compatible with current operating systems will not be supported.  CAS Computing will not install or provide support for outdated versions of software on new computers.  It is the user's responsibility to acquire current versions of software not licensed by the University.
